It just doesn’t seem right. Something is missing.
The past week or so at the office has essentially been quiet with no phone calls from coaches reporting in their high school sports results. And while that means things have been less busy within our sports department, it’s just not the same.
With summer approaching prep sports are completed. Our sports department now looks to events such as the Big Rock Blue Marlin fishing tournament, American Legion baseball, some golf tournaments, among other things.
But the thing is, I just don’t feel the same. I feel lost. You see, among the many things we cover here in sports, prep events are my favorite. Maybe it’s because of the coaches and players I get to work with or maybe it’s because of the so many quality teams we have in our area.
Nonetheless, I first realized that prep sports were done for now when I finished writing my stories Saturday on the White Oak’s girls soccer state championship victory over Charlotte Catholic. May I add, one of the best soccer games I have seen.
Of course the end of prep sports for now doesn’t mean the end of stories about it. We still are going to have All-Area teams in baseball, soccer and softball and it just came to my attention that we have several All-State soccer players.
After that we will try our best to provide good local coverage on other sporting events. Then it won’t be long before the high schoolers hit the field or the court once again. From today, 85 days before the first prep sports get under way with football games.
Now back to the action.
